A Khanqah is a building designed
specifically for gathering of Sufi brotherhood or Taliqa and is a place for
spiritual retreat and character reformation. In the past, and to a lesser
extend nowadays, they served as hospices for Sufi Travelers (Salik). They are
found throughout the Persian-influenced Islamic world, especially Iran, Central
Asia and South Asia.
In the Arab world, especially
North Africa, similar building are also found, which are known in Arabic as
Zawiya. In Turkey and other formerly Ottoman areas like Albania and Bosnia,
similar buildings or Khanqah are called Tekke or Tekye.
Although the origin of Sufism
within Islam is obscured together with the first Khanqah, Sufi traced their
movement back to the holy prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H), but according to Jonathan
Berkay, academic historians argue for later dates. Furthermore, according to
the same author, one of the characteristics features of later medieval Sufism
was the spread of institutions, variously known as Khanqahs or Ribats complete
with buildings and endowments which housed and supported the activities of the
mystics. Their origins are quite obscure, but it is likely that their routes lie
in ninth and tenth century Iran.
In our modern time where science
and technology have taken the world by storm, knowledge is conveyed through
e-learning, letters are sent through e-mail and business is being conducted
through e-commerce. In the same way spiritual knowledge is being spread through
technology.
The Multiversity of Spirituality
has come into existence on the 24th of May 2008 with the launching ceremony of
this website from where spiritual knowledge will be disseminated.
IS GOING TO BE OUR
E-KHANQAH.
We have setup one khanqah in
Mauritius and one in London UK whose custodian is sister Zahida. In the same
way we have set up this E-KHANQAH whose custodian is brother Afzal.
Through this e-khanqah we hope
to spread around the world all the knowledge and techniques of spirituality
which people desperately need to bring the necessary transformation through
Spiritually Oriented Prayers. We hope and pray that our humble contribution
turns the world into a better place to live.
